Follow-up on the $100 laptop that was to save the Third World

In a previous post I showed some irrational exuberance over the $100 laptop that was conceived and demonstrated by Nicholas Negroponte. A July 31st article on titled “CIO Jury: $100 laptop is “fundamentally flawed” ” brings up a series of very valid arguments brought up by a panel of CIOs, points that are independently forcing a wholesale rethinking of this concept. I thought many of the points showed a more global and holistic perspectives on this issue which hold a lot of merit. At the very least, I have to take some responsibility for not having extended myself to think beyond the gee-wiz factor and to consider the impact of trying to deploy a tool like this. Suffice it to say, it’s good to see those who are to be impacted by this the most doing that level of thinking for themselves. India has already withdrawn their order. We’ll see who’s next.
