It’s All Smiles at the 2008 Kiteboarding Nationals – San Francisco Bay

Posted by direwolff on June 14, 2008

As most seasoned kiters know, keeping a serious face during anything to do with kitesurfing is down right near impossible to do. Even on game day, when the racing stakes are up, every kiters you talk to can’t help but beam a smile. Spent Saturday walking around talking to racers after their finish and with few exceptions, it was happy all around regardless of where they placed. Couldn’t resist sharing these shots here…

(Row 1: Steve Gibson, John Gomes (race organizer), Sandy Parker (Kitopia); Row 2: John Van Malsen, Clarissa Hempel, Eric Due; Row 3: Anthony Chavez (2007 Nationals Champion), Donny Parker (Kitopia), Jeff Kafka (WindOverWater); Row 4: Chip Wasson (Ultra Nectar), Shawn Richman/John Modica/Sky Solbach/Damien LeRoy/Kent Marinkovic, Shawn Richman)

Even the spectators couldn’t help but get into the smiling trend…

(Spectator Row: Bill Tai (KiteVC), Kathy Smith/Chad Nicols, Pete Cabrinha (Cabrinha Kites)/Austin

It was great to see all of this happiness bundle up in one place :)

Kitesurfing Videos of the Crissy Field & other Bay Area Locals

Posted by direwolff on March 7, 2008

Happened to recently catch the kitesurfing videos that my good friend Joe Kewl (aka. “Joe Cool”) put up on YouTube. Lots of clips on kite course racing which I wrote about when it first started, but has grown tremendously in a short period of time. Joe also put up a couple of videos on riding the swell under the Golden Gate Bridge and flat water riding in the Delta. It was good to see the crew in character enjoying what it is we’re all addicted to, now get ready to SEND IT!!!

First for local Golden Gate Bridge riding…

Now let’s bring a little Delta interlude (I get a brief cameo but didn’t get much air on my trick)…

And now for some kite course racing action…

Scarier pics of Kiters at Mavericks two weeks ago

Posted by direwolff on November 3, 2007

The pics that I previously posted were nice and clear, and while the swell was obviously big, it still looked like a nice fun ride. Well, now for another view of the same day, perhaps one could say a more ominous view…

…and…

…and…

These pics were taken by someone named “pdogg”, who posted them on one of the iKitesurf.com forums. Having been out riding just a couple of miles away, I can tell you that the previous pics were more representative of the day in all its sunny glory, but these pics offer another cool perspective.

Kitesurfing Mavericks!!!

Posted by direwolff on October 31, 2007

Two Saturdays ago, my buddy Charlie & I started driving south along the coast from San Francisco to decide where we would kitesurf. We past by Ocean Beach, but the big swell was making a washing machine effect out of the inside and wasn’t going to be very manageable to get to the outside. We continued to head south deciding that we would either hit Half Moon Bay or keeping going south to Scotts Creek down by Santa Cruz. The winds and swell was definitely up and as we approached Roosevelt Beach in Half Moon Bay, and as we looked up wind we could see four kites up by Mavericks. We stopped and got the binoculars out, and sure enough it turned out to be Jeff Kafka, Chip Wasson, Steve Gibson and Sean Richman.

It was a pretty crazy day to be out there, but here are some pics of Jeff Kafka hitting the Mavericks break…

(Note: if the pics are not displaying, click on the broken image as I’ve linked them to the originals)

Yee-ha!!!

Charlie and I decided to stick it out at Half Moon Bay which had the biggest swell I’ve ever ridden there. Probably somewhere close to double-overhead. Looking at these pics, I sure wish we had gotten motivated to experiment with this giant :)
